You may have heard different opinions about coconut oil. The confusion is that it is high in “unhealthy” saturated fat but is also rich in beneficial Medium-Chain Triglycerides (MCT).
MCTs tend to be lacking in the average diet, with the best source being coconut oil. Breast milk is also high in medium-chain triglycerides.
MCTs are absorbed and sent directly to the liver, where they are metabolized in much the same way as carbohydrates. This means they are very likely to be burned as fuel instead of being stored as fat. Due to their efficient use as fuel, athletes often use MCT as a quick energy source during a workout.
The fatty acids found in MCT are called Medium-Chain Fatty Acids (MCFAs). One of the MCFAs in coconut oil is lauric acid and there has been a lot of focus on lauric acid over the last few years due to its antiviral and anti-acne properties. Studies have shown lauric acid’s derivatives were found to be effective against MRSA, which can be a very serious antibiotic-resistant staph infection that is most often acquired while in a hospital.
Lauric acid has been used to treat viral infections, cold sores, bronchitis, yeast infections and promotes intestinal health by helping to rid the body of microorganisms that cause chronic inflammation, such as Crohn’s disease, irritable bowel syndrome or leaky gut.
Coconut oil is the safest and most stable oil for cooking.
Due to the fact that, for the most part, MCT is processed in the liver, it should be used with caution by those who have a liver disorder such as cirrhosis.
So what about the saturated fat? Check your diet! How much food containing saturated fats are you eating? Foods high in saturated fats are meat and dairy!
Most North Americans get twice as much protein than they need. Too much protein causes kidney problem and indigestion. Adding more coconut oil to your diet and eating less animal products will contribute to your health, in more ways than just getting more MCTs. And at the same time you can safe a few of the 70 billion animals slaughtered for meat each year.
